Selina Kyle as Batwoman: Good Idea?

I am torn.

DC has confirmed that they are launching a new title called Batwoman after the "One Year Later" event of Infinite Crisis.

An interesting rumor making the rounds is that this new Batwoman will turn out to be Selina Kyle (the other, more prevalant rumor is that it will be a healed Barbara Gordon, but I just don't see DC giving up on Oracle, so I just won't believe that).

I think that could be an actual good idea.

They will have the whole "was I brainwashed into having a change of heart from a thief to a do-gooder," and at the end, Selina will decide to break from her criminal past (look at what her past has led to in recent Catwoman issues) and start a new, only by changing ONE letter!

This will allow DC to also introduce a NEW character named Catwoman, who can be the villain.

So they get their pie, and eat it, too.

A new title (Batwoman).

A new BATMAN tie-in title (Batwoman).

A good character arc for Selina Kyle.

PLUS, they get to keep Catwoman as a property. Heck, they could even make the new Catwoman black, to tie in with the Halle Berry film!

So I am coming down in FAVOR of the idea (if it happens). What say you?

Um, no no no no no. Am I the only person that's read the new Catwoman series since the beginning and loves it? And loves Selina as Catwoman? And would feel cheated if they did a cheap mindwipe thing and she just "decided" to become Batwoman? Bad bad bad idea! From what I've seen everyone talking about this idea and encouraging it are not frequent readers of her series, don't care about how she turned into protector of the East End and don't really 'bother' with her in general.

The Catwoman series is my favorite (it's the only one I get really passionate about) and if they touch it like that, I'm going to be pissed. I mean, first they pervert Leslie Thompson (and I love people that say SHE'S not important & no one knows her, even though she's very important to Catwoman/Selina & has a huge presence.) If her current personality is attributed to a mind-wipe, it was just tacked on for the Crisis and cheap character assassination. Most people don't even realize that her personality hasn't changed at all- she's just not a selfish thief anymore. And why the heck did you bring up the icky Halle Berry movie, and mentioned a "tie-in" would be a good idea???

HAS EVERY COMIC BOOK READER GONE INSANE BESIDES ME???

So in closing- no, I don't like that idea. They also better not make Babs her, as she's way better as Oracle than she ever was as a Batfemale. Oracle is such a huge, valuable resource that everyone depends on so much in the DCU that now I don't know if they'd function well without her. We have plenty of "capes" running around as it is.

Sorry- I just needed to get that all off my chest. :)

Personally, I'd prefer Selina stay Catwoman and walk that line between good and evil. Part of why she's so interesting is that she's a "bad girl." Also, she's Bruce's type this way: tall, dark, curvy, unattainable, and has a dark side (see: Talia, Wonder Woman).

Batwoman? I wouldn't be too surprised if Cassandra Cain grew up a bit (after all "Cain" sounds a lot like "Kane," and we all know how Kanes are suited to being bat-people), or if Huntress took the role (though I can't imagine why). Selina Kyle, in my mind, *is* Catwoman.

Don't get me wrong, Steph, if they could keep Catwoman going as is, I, too, would prefer that arrangement.

I am more going with what I think would be the best possibe solution involving DC having a new title called "Batwoman."

If DC is GOING to have a Batwoman series, I would prefer it to be Selina that to be Barbara Gordon (and I just do not believe there is another real option out there beyond those two).

Because, in the current Catwoman series, we see that Catwoman's criminal past is specifically affecting her current stories. She basically went along with the villains to protect the East End. Wouldn't that, in and of itself, be a good reason to divorce herself from the name Catwoman?

And yes, a mind-wipe making her a good person is a silly idea, but I have enough faith in Will Pfeifer that that will NOT, in fact, be the ultimate resolution of Catwoman #50.

I kinda like the idea, actually. It's clever.

The idea that the post-Identity Crisis Selina is a good guy (gal?) because she was mind-controlled back in the day is interesting just because the original story of her becoming a criminal from a life a upstanding citizenship was a brain damage from a plane crash.

So however she is in whatever continuity it is how she should not be.
