Monday Challenge - Who Would YOU Protect?
If you were DC's legal counsel, and they, in 2005, only had enough money to file a federal trademark claim on ONE of the following two characters (for use in merchandise, etc.), which one would YOU protect?
Superboy
or
Supergirl?
Superboy

Supergirl?

Supergirl. Sex sells.
Then again.... There are a lot of gay (and loyal) comic book readers out there. Hmmmm
Definitely Supergirl, which is a far more marketable and valuable name. Wanna sell stuff to kids? Superman will work just as well as Superboy, if not better, for boy-type kids, but neither appeals all that much to girls.
I remember, for instance, seeing that at one point, they came very close to putting out a line of girl-oriented action figures - a la the then-popular She-Ra series. It was to feature Wonder Woman a bunch of original characters, and possibly Supergirl too, though I'm not certain of that.
Anyhow, you don't get those sorts of untapped options from Superboy.
And you can market the Superboy character quite easily without ever using the Superboy name, even when you *do* own it, as DC is doing quite profitably with *Smallville*.
I'd have to say Supergirl just because I want to hold her up to a lightbulb and see if I can see through her abdomen.
After that's done I'd probably get bored and wished I had someone to drink super beers with and regret not saving superboy.
