Anyone Remember?
Does anyone remember when the Dire Wraiths were a big thing in Marvel comics?
I mean, think about this for a moment - a ROM the Space Knight villain was not only appearing in other Marvel titles, but they played IMPORTANT roles in many Marvel titles, including Marvel's most popular title, Uncanny X-Men!
The Dire Wraiths were intergalactic bad guys who could kill people and absorb their appearance.
This ability was a major feature in an X-Men storyline involving Rogue and her split personality of Carol Danvers. Meanwhile, the Wraiths fought the Avengers, they fought the Hulk...they were all over the place!
Can you even imaigne, nowadays, like, a character from Yu-Gi-Oh or something like that not only becoming a PART of the Marvel Universe, but being accepted to the point of having storylines in NON Rom titles tying directly into their stories!!!

No joke, I was just thinking about the Dire Wraiths five minutes ago. The story where they killed Torpedo in order to lure Rom into a trap seriously freaked me out. Yeah, whatever happened to them? Did Phoenix eat their planet or something?
The whole Dire Wraiths/Rom thing pisses me off to no end.
I used to collect whatever Rom issues I could find in musty old back bins, but I was never able to find the last few issues where they finally wrap him up.
Although from my years of coming across tidbits of information, apparently the entire Marvel universe at the time (a la Secret Wars/Infinity Gauntlet) teamed up with Rom and blew up the Dire Wraiths homeworld.
And then never a mention of them again, not even a trade. Freaking jerks.
Yes, towards the end of Rom's comic, all the Marvel heroes teamed up and wiped out the Dire Wraiths.
However, I believe Evan Skolnick brought them back (or at least some of them...maybe a few survivors?) in the pages of New Warriors, for the very last New Warriors storyline.
ROM for a time was really creepy. especially when the female Wraiths took over. Friend of mine brought like 50 ish over from the States, so I could read them all in one go.
They were so integrated in the MU, they made them some kind of Skrull-Mutants, if I remember correctly. ROM was a copyrighted toy, but the Wraiths should be (c) by Marvel. They could alw2ays return.
Brian, I wouldn't have thought it possible to bring Rom back as the procedure to get into his space knight regalia entailed the storing of his "fleshy meat bits" outside of his suit. Something he always seemed to be lamenting during the run.
You wouldn't happen to remember any details on how they fit him in would you?
Axel, actually you're right the Dire Wraiths where Skrulls who practiced some type of dark magics and had their base of operations / homeworld tossed into some void region of space by the regular Skrulls.
Marvel should do a Dire Wraiths vs. the Brood series.
I picked up Rom #60? The big conclusion to the Wraith War, guest starring everybody, one thin quarter at my local comic shop...and my car was stolen before I could read it. My car, minus the battery, was found a month later, but the comic remains missing. Seriously, I'm pretty much OK with Wraiths destroying humanity. Invader Zim destroying humanity. So...angry...
Yes, I did pick up some of these dangling plot threads in the pages of NEW WARRIORS volume I, starting around issue #59, along with NOVA #17 and #18. I introduced Volx, the Dire Wraith queen. Also, the two Turbo characters wear the Torpedo armor. Couple links...

We even managed to sneak in a cameo shot of Rom himself in one of the issues, in a flashback/exposition sequence (in NW #74, I think...).
Hope that helps. :-)
