Well, since misterjoel did 1 and 3 bettter than I could (I only knew the first was a JLA and the third an early FF that guest-starred Namor. Wasn't sure of the numbers on either, though), I'll cover him for the one he missed.

2. Tom Strong #1

I was thinkin' # 2 was a Doc Savage Cover. It looks pulp-y.

(An I figured the other two were from SOMEWHERE in Sekowsky's JLA and Kirby's Fantatstic Four, but I didn't know the issue numbers.)

Incidentally, I thought that the rampant homaging really hurt "Tom Strong." The first few issues were great fun, but the creators slowly slipped into History of Comics Lecture Mode, and the series got boringer and boringer. Sort of the same thing happened to Promethea, althhough replace "History of Comics" with "Metaphysical."

I rather liked the "Comics History Lesson" of Tom Strong and the "Metaphysical Textbook-iness" of Promethea myself, but I can definitely see why others wouldn't. They're certainly not for everyone.

Tom Strong WAS, in part, based on pulp heroes, like Doc Savage, so you could be right about the influences for #20's cover. Hmm...
