The REAL American Power
Remember the big fuss over the cover of Chuck Dixon and Greg Land's American Power?
Leaving aside the appropriateness of that cover (as this IS a snark free blog...hehe), it is interesting looking at THAT cover in relation to Atlas' short-lived Captain America line of comics from the 50s (as mentioned yesterday).
Check out this first VERY patriotic cover.
Yep, that's right - CAPTAIN AMERICA - COMMIE SMASHER!!
Why do we not have cover copy like that nowadays?!!?
The next two issues express similar sentiments...
I love the bit about "The Betrayers" and about the communist "hordes." It must have stunk to have to caricature the Soviets, because they do not really have any consistent feature to spoof. Poor artists.
Speaking of artists, the artist on at least two of the covers is none other than JOHN ROMITA!!
The only thing that would make these issues truly complete would be having Cap team up with Joltin' Joe McCarthy to go bust some commie heads!!
